Q&A
Q. I'm concerned about buying fabric online, since I can't see it or touch it myself.
A. This is certainly the largest challenge of online fabric purchase. We do everything we can to provide very detailed information, including multiple large photos, weight, stretch, and so forth. Still, there's nothing like being able to hold the fabric in your hand, which is why we offer FREE swatches to our members! You can sign up here, and then use the Order a Swatch link at the bottom of the fabric page to order your swatches.
 
Q. What is stretch and how do you determine your fabric's stretch description?.
A. Stretch is either the amount of stretch that a fabric has along its width (in linear yards) or height from salvage to salvage (top and bottom in inches). We use 2-way to describe one of these two directions and 4-way to describe both (so if you're used to 1- and 2-way stretch descriptions, please adjust accordingly in your yardage considerations).
 
Q. How do I get free swatches?
A. Just create a free account through our website. No credit card is necessary, only your email and shipping address. Then, after every fabric order you place, you will get another 5 free swatches. Unfortunately, due to the high, sample order volume we can no longer process swatch orders over the phone, except for those that don't have internet access. We apologize for any inconvenience.
 
Q. What if I want swatches but don't want to create an account?
A. You can always buy swatches for $1 each with no account.
 
Q. How quickly will my order ship?
A. Orders placed on a weekday usually ship the same day if received before 12pm PST, and the next day if after that time. We offer a variety of shipping types including Ground (3 - 7 days depending on where you live), 3 day, 2 day, and Standard Overnight. Please see our Shipping page for more info.

Very occasionally an item may be back-ordered, which may add a delay or a week or two to the order. In that case, we will let you know the estimated date of shipment. If you have a certain date you need the fabric by, mention it in the comments box on checkout and we will do our best to get it to you by then!

 
Q. What if my order is delayed, lost or missing?
A. If you haven't yet received your order and believe it has been lost contact us. We will begin a trace on it with FedEx. If they have not found the package within 24-hrs we will file a claim. The claim process takes approximately 10-days to complete. Once FedEx has determined the lost package is their fault (i.e. left at the wrong location or was missing from were they left it and can not be recovered and/or delivered), we will refund or reship the order, as per your instructions.

*We will not reship or refund any order until FedEx has completed their claim investigation.

Also, packages that are reported as missing but didn't require a signature may not be refunded by FedEx. DF will hold to FedEx's resolution and only refund when FedEx does. Signature Service Requested must be entered in the order comments section to require this service.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

If you're swatch order is overdue, please contact us to confirm the shipping address and we will reship the order. Orders will not be reshipped until the address is confirmed. If your shipping was free and you'd like to receive a refund on the swatches, let us know. Otherwise, we will have to follow the same procedures as from above.

 
Q. Is there a minimum order?
A. No, you can order in any amount down to a single yard.
 
Q. Do you offer discounts for large orders?
A. Yes. See the volume discounts, wholesale and fabric discounts pages for more details.
 
Q. What will shipping cost?
A. It depends on the total weight of your order, and what shipping type you choose. To find out the exact cost, add the fabrics to your cart and then click Checkout. Fill in your shipping address and the next step will show you your shipping options and the exact cost for each. Of course you don't have to continue with the checkout if you don't want, so feel free to use this even if you aren't planning to order right away.
 
Q. What countries can you ship to?
A. Due to excessive difficulties with customs delays, import duties, and other difficulties, it has become necessary to suspend our international ordering capability indefinitely. Please contact your national government representative and ask for decreased trade barriers with other nations.

We may still be able to accommodate some wholesale orders internationally. Please inquire on our wholesaler page for more information.

 
Q. What shipping method do you use?
A. We offer a variety of shipping types through FedEx: Ground, 3 Day, 2 Day, and Standard Overnight. Swatches ship by postal mail, although FedEx is also available for faster service. You will be given the choice at checkout, as well as exact cost for each option, and estimated time of delivery.
 
Q. Can I pay with a credit card?
A. Yes, credit cards are a fast and safe way to make payment.
 
Q. Can I pay with PayPal?
A. Yes, PayPal is another great way to pay and will get your order underway immediately.
 
Q. Can I pay with a check or money order?
A. Currently you can only pay by money order. Please complete your order up to the billing page, with a note in the comments/special instructions window saying MONEY ORDER PAYMENT and then contact us to complete your order. Please do not send money orders to us without first getting authorization from us. If you do not get approval from us (prior to mailing your money order), we can and may refuse the right of sale. Thanks for your understanding.
 
Q. Can I pay with a purchase order?
A. Currently purchase orders are only issued to repeat customers, first time customers must purchase their first time order with us in advance. Subsequent orders may be purchased by purchase order for fabric orders of $250.00 and more (before shipping) and payments are due within 30 days of order arrival.
 
Q. Can I order partial yards?
A. For simplicity we only accept whole numbers for yardage.
 
Q. Will my fabric come in a continuous piece?
A. For any amount up to the bolt size (usually 30 - 50 yards, dependent upon the fabric), your fabric will always be continuous. For amounts over the bolt size, you will get the whole bolt on the roll exactly as it comes from the factory. If you are ordering a large amount and are concerned about the continuous lengths, just mention what you need in your comments and we will do our best to accommodate you.
 
Q. How do I determine the length of fabric I should order?
A. For starters, check out our automated fabric length calculator.

The standard unit for fabric purchase is the yard. A yard is exactly three feet, or 36 inches. If you're more comfortable with the metric system, a yard is about 10cm short of a meter.

If you know the flat surface area you need to cover, you can calculate the length you need by taking into account the width of the fabric. Each fabric is slightly different in width, though most are around two yards wide. So let's say you were using our 56" velveteen to cover a poker table that is 6 ft x 4 ft. 56" is more than 4 ft, so the width of the fabric will be plenty to cover the table in the short direction. Then all you need to do is compute the length. 6 ft divided by the size of a yard (3 ft) is 2 yards. So 2 yards of fabric would be exactly the amount that you would need. If you want it to hang over the edges, or just give yourself a little room for error, you could round up to 3 yards.

When calculating lengths for something with pleats or folds, such as curtains, you'll want to double or even triple your estimated surface area - depending on how deep and frequent the folds are to be. So covering a 6 ft x 4 ft window would use the same calculation as the poker table above, but taking into account the folds, you would probably want to go for at least 5 yards.

 
Q. Do you sell wholesale?
A. Absolutely. If you are in California, you will be prompted for your nine-digit seller's license number at checkout time and the tax will be deducted from your order. If you're not in California, tax will not be charged and no seller's license is necessary. Q. All your prices are on even quarter amounts. What gives?
A. We believe our customers are intelligent enough to know that $6.99 is really the same thing as $7.00. Therefore, we price our fabrics on even dollar amounts (in most cases), and on even quarter amounts (.25, .50, .75). We think that this is easier to read, and makes it more convenient to do spot estimations of your final cost.
 
Q. What's the deal with special order colors?
A. Some of our fabrics offer a special order color palette. These colors are not in our normal stock, but can be ordered for you. The follow restrictions apply:
  • Minimum order is five yards (or two yards if the fabric costs $15/yd or more).
  • Delivery time may be increased by a day or two.
  • Sometimes (though rarely) the fabric will not be available immediately. If that's the case we'll contact you to let you know when it will be available and give you the opportunity to alter or cancel your order.
  • Special orders are non-returnable - so make sure it's what you want by ordering a swatch first!
 
Q. Can I send fabric as a gift?
A. Absolutely! Just add fabric to your cart and checkout as normal. Enter name and shipping address of the person that you wish to send the gift to, but your own phone number and email address (which is where the receipt will be sent). Enter your own billing address on the appropriate page, and then on the final step before checkout you'll be asked if the order is a gift. Check the checkbox and then enter in a note you'd like to send with the gift. The packing slip they receive with the order will list the fabric(s) so that they know what they are getting, but no pricing. Your note will be shown in large, colorful letters just below the list of fabric on the slip.
 
Q. Do you offer gift certificates?
A. Yes. We currently offer gift certificates exclusively through an electronic discount code, similar to our fabric discount codes. Contact us to place your order for our green gift certificates and we'll create a custom code for you to share through any medium: email, hand-written, etc. you wish to convey your gift to your loved one or friend.

Q. Can I get one of your fabrics in a color not listed on the site?
A. Sometimes, contact us to find out. A minimum of ten yards will apply to special-ordered colors.
 
Q. I don't see the fabric I'm looking for...
A. Try searching using the search box at the top of each page. If you aren't able to find it, then we may not carry it. However, you are welcome to contact us if you have suggestions for new types of fabric we should carry!
 
Q. I know the manufacturer of a fabric I want...
A. Unfortunately we cannot match fabrics with manufacturer information.
 
Q. Can I get a printed catalog?
A. Our website is our catalog; we do not currently offer anything in print. We update our products frequently, so the website allows you to get up-to-the-minute information on pricing, color, and availability. It also helps us keep costs down so that we can offer you our famously low prices.
 
Q. What is your return policy?
A. We want you to be completely satisfied with your order. If for any reason you are not, you can return the fabric for a complete refund. See our Polices page for details. Please note that swatches, special orders, remnants and clearance items are final sales and cannot be returned.
 
Q. How can you sell this fabric for such low prices?
A. As an internet-only store, our overhead is much lower than traditional fabric outlets. We pass those savings on to you.
 
Q. What can these fabrics be used for?
A. Sewing, quilting, curtains, costumes, car interiors, art cars, upholstery, tablecloths, wall decoration, pillow covers, arts & crafts, purses, gaming tables, photo shoot backdrops - whatever you can think of!
 
Q. Are any of your fabrics fire treated or rated?
A. Unfortunately none of our fabrics are treated chemically for fire retardation. Please contact your local fire department authority for your region's exact legal specifications.
 
Q. What about generous cuts?
A. To ensure the yardage ordered arrives to measurement and there's room to spare, we tack on an extra 4"-6". Please inspect the fabric upon delivery for any flaws and notify us immediately for a timely resolution if there are any problems.
 
Q. Will my fabric come folded or rolled?
A. Most single-yard amounts will come folded. You can request your fabric be rolled for an extra $5 tubing/rolling fee, through your order notes. We'll require a secondary payment for this, so please contact us to arrange for this.
 
Q. What are your fabrics country of origin?
A. Our fabrics are manufactured in China, unless otherwise noted on an individual fabric's page.
 
Q. Do you manufacture your fabrics and if not, can you recommend someone that does.?
A. Sorry but no to both.
